Unique Employment Services Ltd in Luton are pleased to support the local Keech Hospice. After seeing the incredible work they complete – it is an amazing cause.
The Keech Hospice is a charity based in Luton which gives palatable care to both Children and adults with terminal illness in the Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire area.
It is ran by over 1,000 people in various roles, who ALL give their time and effort on a voluntary basis. There is actually only 2 people who are paid employees.
Keech not only care for patients at their state of the art facility, but they also care for patients at their homes as well.
The facilities they have are amazing! They have a swimming pool that allows patients to feel weightless and enables patients to interact with their families in a different way, i.e – being able to cuddle and hug family members whilst being in the pool.
There is a sensory zone, which is incredible, this allows patients to interact in ways they would not normally get the opportunity to do. The landscaped and manicured gardens are incredible, and have been created by celebrity gardeners such as Alan Titchmarsh.
The centre is truly amazing, however it also comes with a big price tag to run. The centre is given on the government minimum in grants, which equates to 25% of running costs. The remanding 75% is made up in denotations and fund raising.
The Centre costs £15k to run, this is just for 1 week!
Unique Employment are very proud to support this vital resource at Peterborough Hospital.
The Amazon Ward is a 30 bed general ward which includes an 8 bed Day Surgery Unit and a 2 bed High Dependency Unit. We treat a wide range of patients from those with broken bones to those with life limiting conditions. Our staff includes paediatric consultants, paediatric doctors, nurse specialists, nurses, nursery nurses, healthcare assistants, health play specialists, health play assistants, physiotherapists, pharmacists, the safeguarding team and ward clerks. We have an open visiting policy so patients can have visitors from 8am to 8pm and have one parent/carer stay with them overnight. Facilities for parents/carers include a stocked kitchen, a sitting room and plenty of play facilities and resources for the patients and younger visitors.
We are very fortunate to be well supported by the local community in terms of donations of both money and resources, all of which are always greatly received.
Founded in 2008, Unique Employment are pleased to give support to the Medical Dogs charity to support their important work.
Medical Detection Dogs works with the powerful scenting ability of dogs to help detect disease or assist with managing life-threatening conditions.
It has two main arms bio detection dogs and medical alert assistance dogs
Our Bio detection dogs are trained to detect the minute odours associated with many cancers and other diseases. This pioneering work could help scientists and medics develop faster, cheaper, non-invasive methods of diagnosis that could impact upon thousands of lives
Working in conjunction with oncologists, scientists and NHS Trusts, we are continuing studies into the detection of breast and urological caners and have published several scientific papers about our work.
In addition, we are exploring the dogs’ ability to detect other cancers and diseases including: colorectal cancer, Parkinson’s disease, malaria and animal cancers.
Our Medical alert assistance dogs support individuals with complex health conditions who often have no awareness of an impending life-threatening medical event.
Using their amazing sense of smell, dogs can be trained to identify minute odour changes emitted prior to an emergency and alert the person to take preventative action.
Our dogs are currently working for people with:
- Type 1 diabetes
- Addisons disease (low steroid levels)
- Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (PoTS)
- Pain seizures & non epileptic seizures
- Severe nut allergies
By assisting individuals with their conditions, our dogs help reduce paramedic call outs and hospital admissions; giving people and their families greater confidence and independence, enabling them to lead a full and happy life.
