Update from Medical Detection Dogs Charity in MK

A lovely update from Medical Detection Dogs about Oscar, who we are so pleased to be sponsoring!

“Oscar has recently celebrated his first birthday and what a busy year he’s had!

Over the last six months Oscar has been out and about as much as possible as he continues his assistance dog apprenticeship with Medical Detection Dogs – travelling as far afield as Inverness in Scotland.

While most year-old puppies are just learning to catch balls in the garden and fetch toys back to their owners, Oscar is also learning to save lives. He has mastered superb behaviour while shopping, visiting cafés and riding on public transport; exactly the kind of places he will need to go to with whoever he is eventually partnered with and feel comfortable working in. And of course, he is still very much being a cheeky and inquisitive puppy when he isn’t working and loves nothing more than playing fetch games and hide and seek when he is off duty!

Oscar has all the basic behaviours well-rehearsed and is now moving on to some of the more advanced training such as retrieving to hand, off-lead control & recall away from distraction.

We are now particularly focusing on Oscar calmly meeting other dogs when he is out and about as this is where additional work is required. Oscar is now living with his Instructor and nearing the final stages of public access training and is joining his Instructor with all their daily activities both in the office and in the evening, whether that’s a walk in a country park, a trip to the supermarket or lunch at a café or restaurant. Over the next few months, we will be assessing Oscar to determine what age and lifestyle of client would be most suitable for him.

We are really proud of Oscar and all he has achieved so far and would like to thank Unique Employment Services Milton Keynes again for supporting us with his training.”
